Imagine a girl group where each member has a digital twin. The twins live in a virtual world, a villain cuts them off, and the members go on a journey to win the connection back. That’s the story SM built around aespa. Their songs tell it one release at a time.

You don’t need to know the story to enjoy the music. But once you do, every early aespa video makes a lot more sense. Here’s the group, the story so far, and three ways to start.

Who are aespa?

aespa is a four-member girl group from SM Entertainment: KARINA, GISELLE, WINTER and NINGNING. When SM announced them in October 2020, it was the company’s first new group since NCT in 2016, about four years earlier. SM debut announcement

The name is the concept. SM says aespa combines “æ,” standing for Avatar X Experience, with the English word aspect, meaning two sides of something. The idea behind the group: each member meets her avatar, another version of herself, and experiences a new world.

In SM’s girl group history, aespa follow BoA, Girls’ Generation and Red Velvet. SM quoted HYPEBAE describing them as the company’s youngest girl group, with a futuristic agenda and a unique use of AI avatars. SM: Savage coverage

They debuted with Black Mamba on November 17, 2020. That day they also opened their fan club, MY. SM says the name means a most precious friend. SM release-day announcement

Meet the four members

SM introduced the members one per day before the debut, in this order:

KARINA

카리나

Revealed on October 28. SM described a Korean member who does it all: vocals, rap and dance. SM’s teaser film MY, KARINA showed her linking up with her avatar, ae-KARINA.

The story in two seasons

SM calls aespa’s story part of the SMCU, the SM Culture Universe. So far it has run in two seasons. Here’s the short version, with the four words you need:

Term What it means
ae Each member’s avatar
SYNK The link between a member and her avatar
KWANGYA The virtual world where the avatars live
nævis A guide who helps aespa

Season 1 (2020–2022): the hunt for Black Mamba

Season 2 (2023–): back in the real world

Season 2 also brought a new habit: both albums end with a song for fans. MY WORLD closes with ’Til We Meet Again, about staying connected through music. Drama closes with You, written for MY.

After Drama (2024–2026)

Our take: The avatar story is strongest in Season 1. If the concept is what pulled you in, start there. If you’d rather just hear the songs, Season 2 is an easier way in.

Big moments so far

About those memes: SM says story words like KWANGYA, SYNK, P.O.S and ae-00 became memes online. Dance moves spread as challenges too, including the “digeut dance.” SM: aespa’s first year

Five things to notice

  1. Two early songs are remakes. Forever reworks a Yoo Young-jin song from 2000. Next Level remakes a song from the Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw soundtrack.
  2. Their first physical album came almost a year after the debut. Before Savage in October 2021, aespa had released only digital singles.
  3. Girls broke a big barrier. SM says it made aespa the first K-pop girl group to sell a million copies in the first week.
  4. Then MY WORLD broke that record. It sold 1,698,784 copies in its first week on Hanteo Chart, a new high for a K-pop girl group.
  5. A UK magazine picked Next Level. NME ranked it No. 45 on its list of the 50 best songs of 2021. SM said aespa was the only K-pop girl group on the list.

Want the whole story? Follow Season 1 in order. Black Mamba, Next Level, Savage, then Girls. Read the glossary above first, and each video will make sense.

Prefer the newer sound? Start with Season 2. Play MY WORLD from track 1, then Drama. You’ll still find story hints, like the anomalies behind the Spicy video, but you won’t need the glossary to follow along. It’s the quickest way to hear where aespa’s music went after KWANGYA.

Here for the members? Start with the four SYNK films. Open the cards above in the order SM revealed them: WINTER, KARINA, NINGNING, GISELLE. Then watch Black Mamba and find each member.

Quick answers for new fans

How do you say the name? It’s written in lowercase as aespa. The “æ” stands for Avatar X Experience.

Are the avatars real people? No. In the story, ae are virtual versions of the members who live in KWANGYA. The four members are the ones who sing and perform.

What is the SMCU? The SM Culture Universe. SM presents it as its vision for the future of entertainment, and aespa’s story is directly connected to it. SM has also released SMCU story videos for aespa that mix live action, animation and motion comics.

Who is nævis? A guide character who helps aespa in the story. In an October 2020 teaser, an AI system with that role helped KARINA’s avatar appear in the real world. nævis later appears as a featured artist on Welcome To MY World.

What is MY? The name of aespa’s fan club, launched on debut day. Their 2023 fan meeting for their third anniversary was called MY DRAMA.
