Think aespa’s Drama is all about its powerful title track? Think again. Half of this six-song mini album had already been performed live before release day, at aespa’s first solo concert. And the record doesn’t end on a big finish. It ends with a song for their fans, MY.

Here’s the story behind Drama, what each song is there for, and the best way to hear it the first time.

November 10, 2023: the day the curtain went up

SM Entertainment’s release-day announcement had a clear headline: the birth of a new “drama queen.” Drama is aespa’s fourth mini album. All six songs were released at 2 p.m. KST on November 10, 2023. The title-track music video went up on the SMTOWN YouTube channel at the same time. SM release-day announcement

The day was planned like a premiere. An hour before the music went out, aespa hosted a Countdown Live on YouTube, TikTok and Weverse, and on IDOLPLUS. Then came TV: KBS’s Music Bank that same day, followed by MBC’s Show! Music Core and SBS’s Inkigayo.

The timing matters too. Drama arrived just six months after MY WORLD, which came out on May 8, 2023 with Spicy as its title track. So Drama was aespa’s second album of 2023.

The title track: every story starts with me

SM calls Drama a hip-hop dance song. The drums hit hard and the synth bass is sleek. The lyrics have a confident message: every story starts with me.

The choreography is built around that attitude. SM points to three moves:

  • arms swinging around with full force
  • a step that looks like walking out from behind a mask
  • a hair sweep along the jawline

SM says these moves are easy for anyone to copy while still pushing the song’s intensity. aespa’s official Japan site describes the video’s world as cool and wild in tone, with an edge that runs through each member’s scenes. Japan MV announcement

Our take: Watch for the three moves SM names. They turn a big concept into small gestures that fans can actually copy. That’s why the performance works so well in short clips.

Beyond the title: what the other five songs are for

Here’s the official track order, with what SM says about each song:

# Song What SM says
1 Drama Hip-hop dance title track: hard-hitting drums, sleek synth bass
2 Trick or Trick A dance song with a hypnotic, fatal charm
3 Don’t Blink First performed at aespa’s first solo concert, SYNK : HYPER LINE
4 Hot Air Balloon First performed at SYNK : HYPER LINE
5 YOLO First performed at SYNK : HYPER LINE
6 You A fan song that carries aespa’s sincere feelings for their fan club, MY

Track order: aespa official discography

SM groups Don’t Blink, Hot Air Balloon and YOLO as songs that show aespa’s range of vocal colors. That’s an important hint. The title track sells the performance. The middle of the album is where the voices get more room.

Those three songs also had a head start. Fans first heard them live at SYNK : HYPER LINE before they were ever released. aespa’s Japan site adds that the songs were already popular from those concert performances. So on release day, part of the audience wasn’t discovering them. They were finally getting the studio versions of songs they had already heard on stage.

That’s a different way to build an album. Usually the title track comes first and the B-sides catch up later. Here, half the record had a fan history before the title track was even out.

Our take: Drama works like a short double feature. Tracks 1 and 2 are the dance half. Tracks 3 to 5 are the vocal half, the songs fans already knew from the concert. Track 6 is the closing scene, and it’s addressed to the audience.

In their words

On release day, SM shared a short comment from each member. These are our translations from the Korean announcement:

GISELLE’s comment about acting ties back to the album’s name. Drama isn’t only the title. It also tells you how the members approached the visuals.

How fans answered

A week after release, SM had results to share. According to Hanteo Chart, Drama sold 1.13 million copies in its first week. SM sales announcement

That made three million-sellers in a row, after Girls and MY WORLD. SM also noted that MY WORLD had passed two million. In China, Drama reached No. 1 on the digital album sales charts of QQ Music and Kugou Music.

The same day, November 17, aespa held a fan meeting for their third anniversary at Kyung Hee University in Seoul. It was called MY DRAMA. So the album that closes with a song for MY was followed by a fan meeting named after both MY and Drama.

How to listen for the first time

You don’t need a plot summary to enjoy Drama. Try this order:

  1. Watch the Drama video first. Look for the arm swing, the mask walk and the jawline hair sweep.
  2. Play the album from track 1. The title track opens it, so go straight into Trick or Trick and compare the two dance songs.
  3. Slow down for tracks 3 to 5. These are the vocal songs from SYNK : HYPER LINE. Notice the change in mood from the opening pair.
  4. Finish with You. It’s written for MY, so listen to it as the album’s goodbye to the people listening.

Then go back to the song that surprised you most. For many listeners it won’t be the title track, and that’s the point of this guide.
