Ambergris comes from sperm whales. On its own, it’s rough-looking and doesn’t even smell good. But mixed with other scents, it makes them stronger. That’s the idea behind RESCENE’s first mini album, SCENEDROME: the members become modern-day mermaids who come to the city looking for lost ambergris. Its title track, LOVE ATTACK, had a second life almost two years later.
The name and the scent
THE MUZE explains the title: SCENEDROME combines syndrome, a craze that sweeps everyone up, with the scene in RESCENE. It means RESCENE plan to start a “scene-drome” with scent and music. THE MUZE: SCENEDROME
The scent this time is ambergris, from the sea. THE MUZE describes it this way:
- It forms naturally in sperm whales.
- It looks rough and doesn’t smell good on its own.
- It’s a rare, luxurious ingredient that makes other scents stronger when combined.
The story: finding lost ambergris
The album’s story is called “FINDING LOST AMBERGRIS.” According to THE MUZE, the members become Gen Z mermaids who leave the sea and come to the city to find lost ambergris. Along the way they discover true value, and share their own story through the different emotions they meet.
THE MUZE ties the scent to the team: like ambergris, the value grows when they’re together, and they shine through each other.
Our take: Ambergris is a clever choice for a five-member group. It’s the ingredient that makes everything around it better, which is exactly what a team is supposed to do.

LOVE ATTACK’s comeback
Here’s the surprise. Weverse Magazine noted that LOVE ATTACK, first released in August 2024, suddenly climbed the charts again much later. The magazine linked it to Hello I Am WONI Nice To Meet You, a YouTube channel run by leader WONI, where the members simply show who they are. The channel had reached 560,000 subscribers. According to the magazine, the channel shows the members’ real backgrounds: WONI going into the sea in her hometown of Geoje, MINAMI leaning into a character from her years in Chiba, and ZENA joking about moving to Seoul from Gyeongju.
Our take: LOVE ATTACK is a good reminder that a song’s story doesn’t end on release day. Sometimes listeners find it through the people first.
