It took aespa four years to release a full-length album, and they announced it with a bang, literally. Supernova came out two weeks early, and it became the longest-running No. 1 in the 20-year history of Melon, Korea’s biggest music service, according to SM. Then came the album it belonged to: Armageddon, aespa’s first full-length record and the start of a story about many versions of yourself.

Four years in the making

SM announced Armageddon on April 22, 2024. It was aespa’s first full-length album, four years after their debut. SM announcement

SM described the plan as a double-title-track comeback in two steps:

Date (KST) What came out
May 13, 2024, 6 p.m. Supernova, the first title track, with its video
May 27, 2024, 6 p.m. The full album Armageddon, ten songs, and the Armageddon video
June 2, 2024 Armageddon (Performance Ver.) video

The album also opened a new chapter of aespa’s story. SM said it carries Season 2 of their world, now expanding beyond the real world and the digital world into a multiverse.

On May 2, a schedule poster laid out a month of teasers, track videos and clips, and aespa’s channel posted a video called Armageddon Launch Code to start the countdown. SM: schedule poster

Supernova: the explosion

SM describes Supernova as a dance song built on a heavy kick and bass, with a minimal track, a catchy topline and synth melody. Hit-maker KENZIE helped write it. SM: Supernova release

The lyrics compare the moment a door to another dimension opens to a supernova, a big explosion beginning inside you. SM says the video shows the members playfully focusing on things others might find pointless, while revealing their true selves, with AI and other modern tech woven into the visuals.

The teasers came first. Starting May 7, the Superbeing images showed each member with her own emblem in her eyes: a heart, a star, a moon and a butterfly. Armageddon: only I can define me

The second title track, Armageddon, is a hip-hop dance song with a heavy sound and a rough, restrained vocal tone, according to SM. Its message: meeting different versions of “me” in different worlds, and becoming a complete “me.” SM summed it up as “only I can define myself.” SM: release day

The teaser concept was called “Find the Authentic”: aespa lost among fake versions of themselves and AI, confused about what’s real. SM: Find the Authentic According to SM, the music video tells the story of two aespas from different worlds who meet and awaken. SM: Armageddon MV teaser

A rollout built like a puzzle

SM’s in-house team, ONE PRODUCTION, explained the promotion in a newsroom interview. Directors Choi Sung-woo and Cho Woo-chul said the Supernova video and the track videos Universe, Superbeing, aepisode and Find the Authentic were meant to connect, an experiment in storytelling across formats. SM: behind the promotion

The promotion site, aespa.com, joined in. To unlock a teaser image, visitors had to pick the real aespa out of a “verifying image” test, the kind websites use to prove you’re not a robot. It fit the album’s theme of fake aespas and AI.

Choi also said the album aimed for a double title track from the start, and that aespa plan to show a new side of the multiverse with each album, with the storyline continuing.

Our take: If the teasers feel like clues, that’s the point. The directors said they wanted fans to piece the concept together themselves.

SM highlighted two B-sides that share a genre but not a mood: SM: Set The Tone and Mine

Our take: Supernova opens the album and Armageddon follows right after, so the first two tracks are the whole comeback in order. Play the album from the top, and you hear it the way SM rolled it out.
