Five months after Supernova took over the charts, aespa changed lanes. Whiplash is their first title track in a techno style, built on EDM, house beats and fast bass, according to SM. The dance move is just as direct: in the hook, the members grab their own necks, acting out the title. It became their fifth million-seller in a row.
A new direction
SM announced Whiplash, aespa’s fifth mini album, on September 23, 2024, for release on October 21 at 6 p.m. KST. It has six songs. At the time, aespa were on their second world tour, SYNK : PARALLEL LINE, which SM said had expanded to the Americas and Europe. SM announcement
SM framed it as a change of pace: Armageddon had been aespa’s most “soemat” (metallic) album, and Whiplash showed their range by trying something new. SM: 2024 recap
The tour numbers explain the busy schedule. SM said the second world tour had sold out across Asia and Australia, and that from January 2025 it would add North and South America and Europe, for 41 shows in 29 cities and regions. SM: comeback preview
The title track: EDM, house and attitude
According to SM, Whiplash is an EDM-based dance song with intense, fast bass and a house beat. It’s the first techno-style song aespa had tried since debut. The lyrics are about refusing to be boxed in, moving forward by your own standards and changing the game wherever you go. A minimal track and a catchy topline let the members’ cool vocals stand out. The teasers, under the concept “Unbeatable Beat,” showed black lipstick, all-black outfits and bold poses.
In the video, aespa step behind the camera. SM says the members, usually the ones being filmed, handle cameras and music gear themselves. They play “Game Changers” who control machines to move between spaces. SM: MV teaser
The move: grabbing your own neck
SM describes the choreography’s key move: in the hook, the members grab their necks, a simple but bold gesture that acts out the song title directly. Shoulder isolations and close coordination with the dancers fill out the rest. SM: performance
Our take: “Whiplash” is what happens to your neck when something changes direction fast. The move makes the title visible, and the sound makes it audible.

SM says Flights, Not Feelings shows a vocal side aespa hadn’t tried before.
Our take: The B-sides split neatly in two. Kill It and Pink Hoodie keep the hip-hop energy, while Flights, Not Feelings, Flowers and Just Another Girl move into R&B and rock.
Solo songs first

The rollout leaned on play. From October 1, short clips of the title track went up on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok.
