For almost a year, aespa existed only as singles. Then came Savage, their first mini album and their first physical album of any kind. It took them into KWANGYA to face Black Mamba. And according to SM, its No. 20 debut on the Billboard 200 was the highest ever for a K-pop girl group’s first album.
From singles to a mini album
SM announced Savage on September 14, 2021. aespa had debuted the previous November and had released only digital singles until then. This was their first physical album. It had six tracks in a range of genres, and pre-orders opened the same day. SM announcement
By then SM was calling aespa a “metaverse girl group,” because of the avatar world behind their music. SM also tied that world to the SMCU, the SM Culture Universe, which it presented as its vision for the future of entertainment. The teasers leaned into it. A SYNK DIVE facial clip showed the members wearing headpieces.
The album came out on October 5, 2021 at 6 p.m. KST. Two hours later, aespa hosted SYNK DIVE: aespa Savage SHOWCASE on YouTube.
The title track: into KWANGYA
SM describes Savage as a trap song. It’s built around hard-hitting drums and bass, with distinctive rap, powerful ad-libs, and an addictive hook and chants. SM: title track
The lyrics continue the story from Black Mamba and Next Level. With help from a guide called nævis, aespa and their avatars head into KWANGYA and confront Black Mamba.
The other five songs
| # | Song | What SM says |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ænergy | A Yoo Young-jin track, with a grand sound and a melody that repeats like a spell. The lyrics describe each member’s character in the story and her battle skills. |
| 2 | Savage | Trap title track that sends aespa into KWANGYA |
| 3 | I’ll Make You Cry | A KENZIE track, with an unusual rhythm and tense synths. The lyrics are about getting over a betrayal and vowing to pay it back. |
| 4 | YEPPI YEPPI | A song with a positive message |
| 5 | ICONIC | A bouncy dance song |
| 6 | Lucid Dream | A pop song that pairs a minimal track with a lyrical melody. The lyrics are about searching for someone who has gone, even while knowing it’s a dream. |

Two details stand out. ænergy opens the album like a character introduction, before the title track starts the fight. And Lucid Dream closes it with something completely different. SM highlights the members’ dreamy vocals on that song.
Our take: If you only know the Savage video, this is the album where aespa’s range first shows. It goes from a story song to a trap single, a revenge song and a dreamy pop song, all on one record.
An album you could step into
The physical album was part of the story too. In April 2022, the P.O.S. version of Savage won a main prize at Germany’s iF Design Award 2022, in the packaging user-experience category. SM explained the design:
- The key image is a portal, and the album case is shaped like a wormhole.
- Fans can scan the CD with the SMTOWN AR app and explore KWANGYA in 360 degrees.
SM said the packaging turned the album into more than a way to carry music. It became a way to experience aespa’s story. SM: iF Design Award
The teasers before release were called Hallucination Quest, a name that would come back in the story video a year later.
The numbers
Savage was a hit from the first week. SM reported:
- Billboard 200: entered at No. 20, the highest for a K-pop girl group’s first album. It was No. 2 on Top Album Sales, and the album appeared on ten Billboard charts in total. SM: Billboard 200
- Sales: 510,000 copies in 15 days, making Savage a half-million seller.
- Music shows: aespa won on Show Champion, Music Bank, Show! Music Core and Inkigayo in the first week. By the one-year anniversary, the total was seven wins.
- Pre-orders: more than 400,000 before release, which SM called unusual for a rookie group.
- iTunes: No. 1 on the Top Albums chart in 17 regions the day after release.
- The video: 50 million YouTube views in 2 days and 7.5 hours, beating Next Level. It reached 100 million in 17 days, aespa’s fastest at the time. SM: 50 million views
On Music Bank and Inkigayo, Next Level was also a No. 1 candidate that week. So aespa’s new title track was competing against their own previous single. SM: aespa’s first year
U.S. media noticed too. According to SM, Good Morning America wrote that Savage was dominating trending music charts worldwide, and HYPEBAE said the song proved aespa’s next-level energy and versatility. SM also noted that Forbes wrote about the album’s U.S. sales and that PEOPLE named aespa one of 2021’s rising stars.
Six months later, at Coachella in April 2022, aespa opened their first-ever live show in the U.S. with ænergy, the first track on this album.
How to listen for the first time
- Start with ænergy, not the title track. It introduces the four characters before the battle starts.
- Watch the Savage video at track 2. Use the Next Level glossary if KWANGYA and nævis are new to you.
- Listen to tracks 3 to 5 together. SM describes them without any mention of the KWANGYA story.
- End with Lucid Dream. It’s the closing song SM singled out for its emotional side before release.
