Most K-pop debuts introduce a group. aespa’s introduced a group and their digital doubles. Before Black Mamba came out, SM had already shown the members linking up with avatars of themselves. Then the debut song turned that idea into a story with a villain.
Here’s how the debut was built, what the song is about, and what happened after it came out.
Three weeks of introductions
SM announced aespa on October 26, 2020. It was the company’s first new group since NCT in 2016, about four years earlier. Over the next four days, SM introduced one member a day, each with a short description: Debut announcement

The name explains the concept. SM says aespa combines “æ,” standing for Avatar X Experience, with the English word aspect. The idea: each member meets an avatar, another version of herself, and experiences a new world.
On November 2, a highlight clip called SYNK, aespa showed the members in the real world connecting with their avatars, called ae-aespa, through a link called SYNK. Debut date announcement
The song: a spell-like hook and a villain
Black Mamba came out on November 17, 2020 at 6 p.m. KST, with the music video on SMTOWN’s YouTube channel at the same time. SM calls it a powerful dance song built on a signature synth sound and heavy bass. The hook sounds almost like someone chanting a spell. SM release-day announcement
The lyrics start the story. aespa learn that a being called Black Mamba is blocking their connection with their avatars and threatening the world. That discovery kicks off an adventure.

Debut-day nerves
On release day, SM shared a comment from each member (our translations):
- KARINA: it didn’t feel real yet. There was pressure, but she wanted to show good songs and stages more.
- GISELLE: it felt amazing that so many people were interested, and it made her want to work harder.
- WINTER: she was excited and nervous to finally show the stages she had practiced.
- NINGNING: she thanked everyone who had cheered with each teaser and wanted to get on stage fast.
The same day, aespa opened their official fan club. Its name is MY, meaning a most precious friend.
What happened next
The early numbers came fast. SM reported these results:
- Billboard: Black Mamba entered the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart at No. 100 on just three days of data. SM called it the highest rank for a K-pop act’s debut song at the time. It also reached No. 5 on World Digital Song Sales.
- China: the song topped QQ Music’s Korea chart for three weeks in a row. SM said that was the longest run at No. 1 for a girl group that debuted in 2020.
- The video: the MV passed 21 million YouTube views in its first 24 hours. It then reached 100 million views in 51 days and 12 hours, which SM called the fastest for a K-pop group’s debut video.
